Birmingham O2 Academy 3...8th Sep 14 Message-ID: Hi all, I won't spoilt the setlist too much, but they played a fair few songs from 'Doubt'. Ahem. The sound was spot on for me, seeming problems with monitors on stage must have petered out after the first song, or else Mike didn't care about it any more. The band looked well rehearsed and relaxed. There was a good vibe on stage, and Iain was his usual calm self. It was amazing seeing Gen back for the (my) first time. I hated Tony anyway ;) The first support act I missed, deciding to eat a meal and play catch up with Mr Alun Rowe (great seeing you mate). The second support act, "Electric Cake Salad" veered between "catchy" and "excruciating". Notable triumphs (?) in their setlist included "Tutti F*****g Frutti" and a 'great' cover of 'Seven Nation Army' (why would you smooth over the bassline from that song?), with a strange pastiche following, of some 90s club songs to an electropop-thrash-metal backing, one song to get 'the treatment' being 'I Like to Move It Move It' by Anon (can't be bothered to google, was it something Allstars?). Crowd size estimate has never been my forte but I'd say 150? There is a decent batch of goodies available for a reasonable price. I availed myself of a couple of ace posters and a ?12 'Doubt' T-Shirt. (Available in M, L, XL and XXL) ;) PS - Smuggle in your own beer if you can. I was drinking water (driving) but Alun's alcohol habit was setting him back a fiver a pint! A pint of lager....?5 A ticket to the show...?17 in advance, ?20 on the door.... 90 minutes of live Jesus Jones songs...featuring the original lineup......priceless. Can I send photos here? I don't 'do' Facebook....Elaine? PPS - There are some solid 'expected tracks' played, and more than one 'surprise' of a new version of a song, as well as a hint at "what new material would sound like"... enough said. I'll happily privately send a setlist to anyone who privately asks for one? Russ PPPS - Matt A, you missed a beauty -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Nice to hear the gig went great, I am so excited for Saturday It's a shame the Indiedaze gig will be shorter, the setlist "hints" sound promising. I can't believe it will be over 17 years since the last time I've seen them! Mike invited me (and my sister, dad en a fellow fan/friend) to come and see them at a similar festival, in Amsterdam in 1997. We ran into Mike outsite of the venue (the iconic Paradiso, an old converted church) and we chatted for a few minutes. The gig itself was amazing, Already was not that old back then. After the gig, I managed to get my little crew backstage, after the guy at the desk said "If you really know them, get one of them upstairs and we'll let the rest in". He was kind of surprised when I actually came back with Mike We chatted to Iain and Mike for a while backstage, maybe an hour. It was a really nice day! I don't think the boys will remember me, because, you know, it's been 17 years. Still look quite the same, though! Anyway, only a few more days, Love, Meta -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... Glad you and the other Maggers had a good night! I'm feeling slightly consoled with the fact I couldn't make it as I'd caught the bug that's been doing the rounds in my family and my eldest daughter's school. So, had I got a ticket as I'd planned on doing it would have gone to waste! First Birmingham JJ gig I've missed in ages! Oh, and luckily I'm old enough to have been at the original Doubt tour so another consolation! Like you, though, Russ I still feel like a teenager despite all evidence to the contrary! Much love to all the Magazine massive. I won't miss the next one! Matt Ps ?5 a pint?!!! A far cry from The Hummingbird's prices! Sympathy to Alun! Nice to read all the reviews from the other gigs :-) My sister and I made our way to Kentish Town fairly late, so we missed the first bands. We were on time for Miles & Erica, who did an acoustic set with gitar and violin. Lots of Wonderstuff songs, and lots of people singing along. Erica was a very cool rockchick with her violin, and a pretty good singer, too. Miles was Miles and had lots of funny stories in between. I used to watch MTV's 120 minutes when he was presenting it, so it was nice to see them. There was no re-entry in the Forum, so they had set up a nice indian streetfood stall upstairs. We had a look around the venue (very pretty) and some nice food. We ended up seeing the last bit of the Darling Buds (who we didn't know), they were quite good. After a nice dj-set with lots of old 90's favourites, it was time for Jesus Jones. I was in front, in between Mike and Jerry's mic stands, so I had a clear view of the stage. Lots of smoke on stage, and there they were! It was brilliant to hear Doubt live, especially songs like "I'm Burning" and "Nothing to hold me" sounded amazing. Iain had to concentrate for this, but it was great. The crowd went wild on the hits, and "Right Here, Right Now" was as appropriate as ever. Loved that the did "Are you satisfied?", as I have an export version of Doubt and would have missed it deeply. But they played it and in the right order, very cool. The band was clearly enjoying themselves, jumping and trashing around, smiling all the time. It was a pleasure seeing Gen killing it on drums. Doubt has a pretty good order for playing it live, hits dotted in between, some killer noisy songs at the end, and then the ultimate closing song with "Blissed". There was actually some pogo-ing going on at the front, more than I would've thought. But things didn't get too rough, just a bit of pushing, shoving and jumping After Doubt, I think they did most of the non-doubt songs I've seen others post, I'm sure of "Zero's and Ones", "Idiot Stare", "Info Freako", "Move Mountains", "Bring it on Down". There's a setlist on setlist.fm that seems pretty acurate which includes "Never Enough". I was giggling throughout the new version of "Stripped", I can imagine the album was a bit too much to play live, but the looks Mike gave during that song, priceless. They are really good live, and even though my sister had already seen them once before, she was quite impressed how they still rocked after so many years. Plus Mike still looks the same as he did 17 years ago! I love the way they all interacted on stage and seemed to know everyone in the crowd. After JJ, we had a little sitdown (we're not as young as we used to be) before we went to see the end of Graham of PWEI's PA set. Bought a girly size Food records t-shirt! Loved that logo so much when I was a teen :-) And I picked up "the collection" cd, didn't have that one yet. Saw the first couple of songs from the Ned's Atomic Dustbin before we headed home. Didn't see JJ after the show, not sure if they did came out afterwards, we could have missed them. It was a great day, well worth the trip to the UK! If there's to be a Perverse tour, count me in, as that is one of my favourite albums of all time! Love, Meta -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed... URL:
